I did not like this game for many reasons, but I will try to be concise. Spoilers ahead:

The main thing (among many) this game suffers from is the writing quality. There is a lot of potential in a game focused on inner dialogues of characters. I enjoy character driven narratives a lot myself, but the dialogue in this game is hard to sit through. I genuinely thought this game was satire at first. Instead of feeling like a deliberate creative choice, Ai Vy's endless venting to the player felt like a lazy way in which the author exposition dumps instead of showing Ai's destructive habits and how they impact her own life. It would have been more interesting and much easier to resonate with a character who is shown struggling with herself instead of her telling me about it for five minutes straight. As the saying goes: show, don't tell.

On a similar note, I didn't appreciate the way in which sensitive topics are handled in Innerlog. I understand what was being attempted with these characters. Even if we are self aware, sometimes we still fall back on unhealthy habits as a way to cope with the absurdity of life. If we are self aware, it hurts less when things go wrong...and I think most people can agree humor is one of the best ways to cope with the human condition. Innerlog had potential to be a touching, poignant story. Unfortunately, it fails due to how sensitive topics such as suicidal ideation, eating disorders, and hypersexuality were handled. It was extremely difficult to resonate with a protagonist who felt like a negative stereotype, especially when the aforementioned topics are already met with so much stigma from others. The way Ai acts reminded me of how people perceive and thus downplay the real struggles of those battling self harm, EDs, trauma, etc. Instead of being a point for meaningful discussion, her struggles are treated as quirky personality traits to get into Keshi's pants. If Ai and the narrative don't even take her own issues seriously, why should the player? She supposedly struggles in interpersonal relationships, but once she meets Keshi they suddenly don't exist outside of 'funny' self depreciating humor? Why not show us instead of making us read dense paragraphs of past texts and sitting through her trauma dumping? She shows worrying behavior and thought patterns, but it's okay because she's self aware? Being self aware does not absolve someone of personal responsibility, Keshi cannot help her if she refuses to help herself first. There are many more issues I found, like Ai’s disregard of boundaries despite complaining about past partners not respecting hers. Because of this, it is so hard to root for their romance. Realistically, Ai and Keshi as a couple would end up as one of the worst situationships you've ever had the displeasure of seeing. There is a paradoxical sense of self awareness the game has, where the characters are self aware of their flaws and yet simultaneously oblivious to their self sabotage and the pain they inflict on others; Ai believes she is the sole victim in her relationships when her own actions that she acknowledges are the reason why people leave her. This is the root of Innerlog's problems. The narrative relies on the player feeling sympathetic and resonating with the two characters, but anyone who has experienced life enough would know that these two are walking red flags. I write this as a warning for others, because I genuinely worry for those who do sympathize with Ai and Keshi. I hope they sort out their issues in therapy because there is nothing worse than realizing too late that you are the problem. If you want to play a game that actually has interesting murder cases with compelling overarching character driven narratives, play the Ace Attorney series, from which Innerlog very obviously takes some inspiration from.

I also got the feeling while playing through that Ai Vy is a self insert and her experiences are directly inspired by the author. There is nothing wrong with using art as a personal outlet, but I think it should be said that narratives should have substance. A personal piece with no thesis is just an aimless vent piece. To the creator, best of luck on your future projects.
